Five Arrested After Robbery, Shootout In Southcrest

Posted: Updated:

Three men and two women were in custody today after one of the men shot at officers as the group was being chased through the Southcrest area, police said.

Jeff Quijano, 21, was wounded by police return fire near 39th and Teak streets, but his wound was not believed to be life-threatening, according to San Diego police Capt. Jim Collins.

The brief chase began on Gamma Street near 38th Street around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday after a patrol officer saw a van being driven erratically and attempted to pull the vehicle over, Collins said.

Officers later learned that the group had just robbed a woman standing in the 3800 block of Gamma Street in Southcrest, San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

The exchange of shots between Quijano and police occurred during the chase when the van stopped and Quijano got out and opened fire, Collins said. A wounded Quijano got back in the van, which sped off, he said.

The pursuit ended on Palm Avenue under an Interstate 805 overpass when the van crashed into a guardrail, he said.

All but one of the suspects, who range in age from 18 to 23, were immediately arrested. The fifth suspect, a man, was arrested nearby -- with the help of a police dog -- after he attempted to flee on foot, Collins said.

The other suspects were identified as Andrea Ramos, 18, Isaura Morales, 22, Jose Lopez, 23, and Octavio Ibarra, also 23, Rooney said.

Quijano, who remained hospitalized as of early this morning, will be charged with three counts of attempted murder, according to Rooney.

Ramos will be charged with felony evading and drunken driving; Lopez and Ibarra will be charged with parole violation; and Morales will be charged in connection with an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, the lieutenant said.
