Summer School Students To Get Free Meals Through August

Posted: Updated:
Local low-income children enrolled in certain summer school programs will get free meals through a program announced today by Feeding America San Diego.

The "Summer Food Service Program," funded through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, provides one free meal and snack per school day to anyone 18 or younger participating in school programs.

"In these hard economic times, low-income children are affected the most, especially when school is out," said Gary McDonald, chief executive officer of Feeding America San Diego. "During summer, these children miss their school lunch, which may be the only nutritious meal they receive all day."

Most sites will start serving meals from the end of this month through August, according to Feeding America.

According to McDonald, there are about 1.6 million children in California under the age of 18, including 472,000 in San Diego, that are at risk for going hungry.
