As Border Security Intensifies, Drug Smugglers Get More Creative

Posted: Updated:
As border security measures get more sophisticated, those attempting to bring drugs into the United States from Mexico are getting more creative.

Border patrol agents said they intercept between three and five narcotics seizures a day at both the San Ysidro and Calexico border crossings.

In 2008, specialized X-ray machines were activated, and the images highlighted in the scans help discover drugs that may be hidden.

Agents said they discovered drugs in a variety of vehicles, including behind hidden panels in cars and trucks, on baby strollers, inside SUV tires, and even in the bellies of sharks and on surfboards.

One drug bust Thursday night discovered over $260,000 worth of marijuana using the X-ray techniques, and other drug busts this week netted nearly $2 million in pot and cocaine.
