Summer Weather Arrives Just in Time for Father's Day

Posted: Updated:
San Diego fathers enjoyed sunny skies and warm temperatures as thousands of families went to the beach or the Padres baseball game on Father's Day, while a few became dads for the first time.

After a dreary and misty "June Gloom" Saturday, the marine layer cleared early around San Diego County on the first day of summer.

Temperatures reached 70 degrees at many beaches, according to the National Weather Service.

San Diego lifeguard Lt. Greg Buchanan said a lot of people were at the beach, and while there were some rescues, none were notable.

"It's a classic summer day," Buchanan said.

The Weather Service is forecasting more summery weather for the work week, with clouds parting by mid-morning and high temperatures well into the 70s away from the immediate coastline.

More than 27,000 baseball fans watched the Padres beat the Oakland Athletics 4-1. Doing their fathers proud were Tony Gwynn Jr., son of the Hall of Famer, who had two hits and scored a run, and East County product Kevin Correia, who pitched into the seventh inning and held the Athletics to two hits.

Five men became fathers for the first time on Father's Day when their children were born at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital, according to Christine Martinez of Sharp Healthcare.

The healthy babies were among nine routine births by mid-afternoon at the medical facility, which is one of the main birthing hospitals in the county, Martinez said.
