County Board Opposes SDG&E Power Shut-Off Plan

Posted: Updated:
County supervisors say no to a plan that would shut down power lines to prevent wildfires. The board voted Tuesday against the plan.

Under the plan, SDG&E would shut off power during dry and windy conditions in areas primed for wildfires. The power company says the plan can work, but others disagree.

"The only way to prevent power lines from starting fires is to turn the power off on those lines in these extreme conditions," SDG&E Fire Preparedness Manager J.C. Thomas.

"We have to have electricity to be able to defend ourselves. We have to have a way to have a warning system. There was no warning system at my fire, so I got woken up at the last minute, and I had to deal with it as such," said Rudy Reyes a 2003 Cedar Fire Survivor.

The plan now heads to Sacramento, where the state's utilities commission will vote on it August 2.
