Fundraiser for Busby Arrested After Melee with Sheriff's Deputies

Posted: Updated:
Sheriff's deputies arrested a woman who hosted a fundraiser for a Democratic congressional candidate at her Cardiff-By-The-Sea home after responding to a loud party complaint.

Shari Barman, 60, held a fundraiser Friday night for Francine Busby, one of two Democrats seeking to replace Republican incumbent Brian Bilbray, the Union-Tribune reported.

It was unknown if Busby was in attendance.

Deputies went to the home on Rubenstein Avenue about 9 p.m to warn the owner that a neighbor had complained about a loud party, sheriff's Sgt. Chuck Yancy told the Union-Tribune.

He said deputies returned when the party did not quiet down.

Yancy told the newspaper that when a deputy asked for Barman's date of birth so he could file paperwork about the noise complaints, she refused to provide the information.

He said about 40 partygoers surrounded Barman when the deputy tried to arrest her, and the crowd was pepper-sprayed.

Barman was booked into jail in Vista jail on suspicion of obstructing a peace officer and battery and later released.

Her first court appearance is set for Aug. 11 in Vista Superior Court.
