You've heard of marathons and triathlons, but how about dive-a-thons? It's a chance to take part in your favorite hobby, raise money and win big prizes at the same time.
The dive-a-thon is San Diego Oceans Foundation's largest fundraiser of the year. The goal is to get divers in the water and spread the message to be good to the ocean.
During the month of July and the first week of August, divers can set fundraising goals and compete to log the most minutes underwater.
"It's so much fun being able to see all the stuff my mom tells me about after diving and actually know what it is," 12-year-old diver Conner Maris said.
"We find these are our future green leaders, these are the children who will inherit what we've given them. We hope, like Conner, they will be inspired as young as possible," Heidi van Lydegraf of the San Diego Oceans Foundation said.
SDOF has two dive shops donating free air fills for all participants - Ocean Enterprises and Dive California. Those with the most money raised can earn trips like a Fiji dive vacation for two.
