Seals Get To Stay At La Jolla Children's Pool... For Now

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A San Diego judge has delayed his order to remove a harbor seal colony from a sheltered beach cove after the governor signed a bill that could let them remain.

Superior Court Judge Yuri Hofmann on Thursday stayed his order just before the deadline expired, pending an October hearing.

The Children's Pool in La Jolla (HOYE'-yuh) has been the focus of court fights for years between seal supporters and those who want the pool restored for human use.

The judge this week gave San Diego 72 hours to begin dispersing the federally protected harbor seals. The city planned to scare off up to 200 seals using recorded dog barks.

But the city asked the judge to stay his order after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger signed a bill permitting the cove to be used as a marine mammal park.
