4-Year-Old Girl Killed In Deadly Trolley Crash

A 4-year-old girl died in a hospital after being struck by a trolley in Chula Vista while riding on the back of her father's bicycle without a helmet, police said today.

The girl's 34-year-old father was seriously injured in the accident, which occurred on westbound L Street approaching Industrial Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Chula Vista police spokesman Bernard Gonzales.

Witnesses said the trolley signals were activated and the barriers had been lowered when the girl's father steered around them and attempted to cross the tracks as the trolley was approaching, Gonzales said.

The trolley operator applied the brakes but was unable to stop in time, he said, adding that the girl and her father were thrown about 40 feet.

Paramedics took the girl to Rady Children's Hospital, where she died a short time later from an apparent head injury, Gonzales said. Her father was taken to UCSD Medical Center with a broken hip and possible internal injuries.

County coroner officials identified the girl as Veronica Ramirez. She died exactly two months shy of her fifth birthday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
