The EPA warns that most people spend up to 90 percent of their cleaning time using products that may actually be making them sick. Ironically, the culprit of many allergy and asthma attacks could be the chemicals in conventional cleaning products.
It's a dirty job that everyone faces. Cleaning around the home can be a real chore. As if cleaning up a mess wasn't bad enough, what if the products you were using were a hazard to your health?
That was the case for Elizabeth Bates, president of San Diego-based Pure Cleaning Services.
"We were using a lot of traditional cleaning products. Every day I was being exposed to these chemicals and I was getting sick all the time, nose hairs crawling back up into my nose and realized I couldn't take the exposure anymore," Bates said.
So Elizabeth started her own company using human-friendly cleaning products called EPIC, which stands for Environmental Products for Important Causes.
She says if these products were not effective, she wouldn't still be in business. And the cost for these green cleaning materials is not as much as you'd think. Save some green while being green. Bates also says the ingredients are easy to identify.
"If you look at the label on a traditional cleaning product, generally they're not going to list the ingredients because they don't want to and they don't have to. On these products they list them right on the label. We have deonized water, vegetable based cleaning agents, surfactants and essential oils," Bates said.
