Passenger Killed In Alpine Car Accident

Posted: Updated:

A 70-year-old National City man was killed today when a sedan clipped a van on Interstate 8 in the East County highlands, skidded off the roadway and tumbled into a gorge.

The 73-year-old woman driving the 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier in which the man was a passenger abruptly swerved in front of the commercial vehicle near Willows Road in Alpine about 12:45 p.m., causing the back of the car hit the front of the truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Cavalier then spun out, careened off the south side of the freeway and rolled about 50 feet down a steep embankment, coming to rest on its wheels, CHP public affairs Officer Brian Pennings said.

The passenger died at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.

Medics airlifted the woman to a trauma center for evaluation of neck and back pain, Pennings said. The driver of the truck, a San Diego resident in his 40s, was unhurt.
