Discovery Channel viewers can't get enough of Shark Week, especially this time of year when thousands of people flock to the beach. Most people know sharks are harmless, but if you've been watching TV at all this week, some programs have been showing nothing but shark attacks, sending a message of fear and danger.
But the fact is shark attacks are rare. Considering that over 200 million people visit U.S. beaches every year, of those millions of beachgoers on 40 are attacked by sharks, while over 30,000 need to be rescued from surfing incidents.
We spoke with a dive shop owner about getting in the water with our local sharks. Ocean Enterprises owner Werner Kurn says you can snorkel or dive with Leopard sharks easily at La Jolla Shores.
We also learn more about a Leopard shark tagging and tracking program Scripps Grad student Andy Nosal is leading. Watch the video for more details.
