Rancho Bernardo Resort Lets You Rough It For Just $19

Posted: Updated:

A stay at a Rancho Bernardo resort for under $20? It's true. But there's a catch - actually, a few of them.

It's considered "roughing it" at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, offered with a sense of humor.

""In these tough economic times we really wanted to be able to expose the property to everybody and give them a little bit of  a break and come to a world-class resort," John Gates said.

The typical room rate of $219 goes down to only $19, as part of the "Survivor Package." But it's more about what you don't get than what you do.

"Well, you don't get any towels, toiletries, shampoo, any soap - really nothing..It's a shell," Gates said.

For every amenity you choose to drop, the price drops accordingly. The full Survivor Package includes no bed or bedding, no TV, no AC, no lights - in fact, no electricity at all. The even pull the plug on the mini bar.

"We take everything out of the honor bar, and you can't even put something cold in there because that's turned off," Gates said.

While they will bring in a tent for the kids, don't even think about calling the front desk for something you forgot.

"Sometimes they'll call the staff for shampoo, and our staff will actually call them on it - 'No, you're on the Survivor Package, there's no shampoo for you,'" Gates said.

But what you do get through this novel deal is full access to the four-star resort.

"You can get up in the morning, play golf and mom can go to the spa and kids can go to the pool, and it's really been kind of fun," Gates said.

This survivor deal is being offered from Aug. 16 to Aug. 31.
