Authorities Use Forensic Evidence to Nab 'A.M. Rapist'

Posted: Updated:
Authorities reported that a former San Diego man was in custody, facing numerous charges in connection with a 9-year-old series of burglaries and rapes in Mission Beach, Ocean Beach and the College area.

Stephen D. Richardson, 33, was identified last month through physical evidence as a suspect in a Sept. 2, 2000, sex assault in Ocean Beach, according to San Diego police.

On Tuesday, SDPD sex-crimes detectives took Richardson into custody outside his home in Arlington Heights, Ill., where the suspect apparently had lived for about five years, San Diego police Lt. Rick O'Hanlon said.

A DNA sample taken following Richardson's arrest allegedly tied him to four other home-invasion sex assaults that took place in San Diego between June 2000 and the following February.

All five crimes were committed during the late-night or early-morning hours, the lieutenant said. In each case, the assailant entered the victim's home through an unlocked door or window, according to O'Hanlon.

Richardson was extradited back to San Diego, where he is believed to have lived at the time of the crimes.

He is expected to be arraigned early next week, O'Hanlon said.
