Small fire forces evacuations at Hyatt Regency La Jolla

Posted: Updated:

Burning or smoldering towels on a linen cart sent smoke through part of a La Jolla Village-area hotel today, forcing evacuations and leaving one person suffering from respiratory problems.

The minor blaze at Hyatt Regency La Jolla, 3777 La Jolla Village Drive, was reported just after 10 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

By the time crews arrived several minutes later, the hotel's sprinkler system had doused the fire, a dispatcher said. Guests were cleared out of the building as a precaution.

Medics took the injured person to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation, the dispatcher said.

The sprinkler system reportedly caused "considerable" water damage inside the hotel, she said.
