Swine flu at San Diego school: What's real, what's rumor?

Posted: Updated:

With the arrival of the swine flu vaccine here in San Diego County, fears over catching the virus appear to be growing. At a San Diego school where 100 kids stayed home today, many people appear to be reacting based on rumors that are circulating.

Nearly a quarter of the sixth-graders at Oak Valley Middle School were absent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Poway Unified School District official Bill Chiment says the sixth-graders were at camp last week when more than 20 got sick and went home early.

Concern grew as more students than usual went absent this week and parents reported symptoms of colds, fevers, flu or strep throat.

Chiment says some children had doctor's notes indicating possible swine flu. But San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten says there's no confirmed diagnosis yet.
