Driver who died fleeing police in college area was local sailor

Posted: Updated:
Authorities said a 20-year-old sailor was killed early Friday when he crashed his vehicle while speeding away from officers in the College area.

The chase began in the 5200 block of El Cajon Boulevard shortly before midnight when the driver, Herb Anthony McClenningham, pulled up next to a patrol car stopped at a red light, San Diego police Sgt. Joseph Steffen said.

When the light changed to green, the man's vehicle took off at a high rate of speed for unknown reasons. The officer in the patrol car chased the man to the 5400 block of El Cajon Boulevard, where the officer lost sight of the vehicle, Steffen said.

Around that time, another patrol officer driving westbound in the 6300 block of El Cajon Boulevard saw the man vehicle's crash and roll over, according to Steffen.

It was not immediately clear why the sailor sped off.

The La Mesa resident died at the scene.
