San Diego County reports case of West Nile virus

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego County is reporting its first locally contracted human case of West Nile virus this year.

County public health officer Dr. Wilma Wooten says a 63-year-old Serra Mesa man was hospitalized with encephalitis after contracting the disease. She says two other county residents developed the virus this year, but they did not contract the disease locally.

West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause flu-like symptoms and, in rare cases, serious illness or death.

Health officials advise county residents to avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk, eliminate sources of standing water and make sure screens on windows and doors fit tightly.
