Train hits car in San Diego, 2 rushed to hospital

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Two elderly people have been hospitalized after their car was struck by a train near downtown San Diego.

San Diego fire spokesman Lee Swanson says their tan Chrysler sedan was stopped on the tracks at about 8:40 a.m. Friday when it was struck by the Coaster, a commuter train that travels from Oceanside to downtown San Diego.

Swanson says it's unclear why they were stopped on the tracks. The vehicle passengers, both in their 80s, were transported to a hospital. The driver is being treated for head injuries and the passenger had minor injuries.

Swanson says the injuries didn't appear life threatening. No injuries have been reported by train passengers.
