Helicopter makes hard landing at Gillespie Field

Posted: Updated:

The pilot of a Department of Homeland Security helicopter made a hard landing at Gillespie Field today while on a training flight, damaging the aircraft but causing no injuries, authorities reported.

The McDonnell Douglas MD 600 came down too fast on a little-used runway at the El Cajon airfield about 11 a.m., fire department spokeswoman Monica Zech said.

The impact broke one of the copter's landing struts and set part of it into the body of the aircraft, which then leaked a small amount of fuel, Zech said.

The accident left the two occupants -- who were practicing landings when the helicopter went down -- with "no injuries, just rattled nerves, I'm sure," the spokeswoman said.

The mishap did not affect normal flight operations at the airport, according to Zech.
