The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Wednesday that an Oct. 9 letter to Dynegy, which leases and operates the facility, states that the ISO will not extend the plant's "must-run" status on two of its four generators.
The letter says permission to operate two of the generators will terminate at midnight as of Dec. 31, 2009.
The two remaining generators provide emergency power during peak use.
Chula Vista officials have complained that the plant is an eyesore on the city's waterfront and have tried to remove it for years.
