Window washer rescued from downtown high-rise

Posted: Updated:

Emergency crews came to the rescue today of a high-rise window washer whose suspension basket got stuck between the ninth and 10th floors of the downtown Omni San Diego Hotel.

A problem with a cable mechanism left the 27-year-old maintenance man stranded on the east side of the 21-floor hotel at L Street and Sixth Avenue about 1:45 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

A firefighter rappelled from the roof of the building to get to the window washer's basket, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said. The victim was then strapped to a harness and lowered to the ground. The rescue took about an hour.

There were no injuries, Luque said.
