Sheriff's officials said a good Samaritan trying to help a stranded motorist was fatally struck by a car Saturday while crossing Encinitas Boulevard.

Kevin Buckmaster, 49, who lived in a trailer in Encinitas, tried to cross the 1000 block of Encinitas Boulevard about 8 a.m. to reach the stranded motorist, when he was struck by an eastbound 1988 Chevrolet Caprice, according to the coroner's office and sheriff's Deputy Steven Magwood.

Buckmaster was pronounced dead at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Magwood said.

The driver of the vehicle -- another Encinitas resident - was uninjured and not arrested, although the death was under investigation, he said.
