"Backroom Bandit" strikes again in series of 16 robberies

Posted: Updated:

An armed robber has hit at least 16 local stores. He's known as the "Backroom Bandit" and police are worried the gunman has the potential to turn violent.

The robber's MO is always the same: he enters the  store carrying a handgun inside a small metal box. He starts to buy something, then opens the lid of the box and displays the weapon inside. The clerk hands over the money and the gunman orders her into the backroom, hence the nickname the "Backroom Bandit."

The man has hit at least 16 stores in San Diego County. The first known robbery was at a bakery in Clairemont Square on Sept. 25. The manager says her female employee was in tears after the crime.

"He opened the briefcase and got a gun out. He pointed it at her and demanded the money," the manager said.

The robber got about $200 then ordered the clerk into the back of the store.

"He just told her 'Turn around, go back there while I leave.' She listened to him and went to the back," the manager said.

Since last month the robber has hit two Pet People stores, one in the Midway area and one in La Jolla. Over the weekend he struck again at a Pizza Hut in Tierrasanta. Earlier this month he hit a Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop, also in Tierrasanta. He's also robbed a couple of Hallmark stores.

The News 8 CrimeFighters mapped all 16 robberies in the series. In the South County there have been three in Chula Vista and two in National City. Further north, 11 more stores were hit, including two in Clairemont, a flower shop in Mission Gorge and a sandwich shop in Mira Mesa.

The suspect is described as an Asian male, 30 to 40 years old, about five feet seven inches tall and weighing 160 pounds. He usually wears a baseball cap and sunglasses.

Since he displays a gun during the robberies, police are concerned sooner or later he may just use it.

The "Backroom Bandit" struck again Tuesday afternoon at a yogurt shop in National City.
