Coast Guard rescues sailors after boat sinks off Baja Coast

Crew members on board a boat sailing to Cabo are safe Thursday morning, after a rescue at sea.

The Coast Guard made a helicopter rescue about 200 miles south of San Diego. According to the captain of The Cross Wave, they needed help after a wayward whale rammed the 40 foot sailboat's rudder.

The crew members did have life jackets, emergency kits and a handheld radio. They prayed for help to arrive, drifting in a lifeboat for four hours.

Despite high winds and seas, the rescue crew managed to hoist each sailor up to the chopper.

"I couldn't quit smiling. I think they thought I was crazy 'cuz I kept smiling. But I was so happy to see them after that experience. I was just praying my little heart out," said Judy Land a crew member.

The Coast Guard says the crew did everything right, preparing with a life raft, flotation devices and emergency radio beacon.
