Ohio murder suspect may have raped woman in Coronado in 1979

A man who is suspected of murdering several women and keeping their decomposing bodies in his Cleveland home may have raped a woman in Coronado while stationed there as a Marine, police said.

Police are continuing their search at the home of Anthony Sowell, where they found the remains of at least 10 bodies and the skull of a possible 11th victim.

Sowell was arrested Oct. 29 after police went to his home to arrest him on a rape charge and found two bodies. He was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to answer to charges of aggravated murder.

Sowell joined the Marines in 1978 and was stationed in Coronado, North Carolina and Okinawa, Japan.

Coronado authorities are investigating whether he may have committed an unsolved rape in 1979.

"We are researching this and looking for information," Police Chief Louis Scanlon said.
