Students living and working near UCSD are concerned about crime in the area. One woman contacted the News 8 CrimeFighters, wanting to know more about sexual assaults in the area.

College students boarding shuttle buses taking them to and from UCSD causes a lot of foot traffic in the La Jolla Colony area near Regents Road and Nobel Drive.

"We're close to the school, so there are always students and a lot of people come and go," a man said.

One woman who works in the neighborhood emailed the News 8 CrimeFighters wanting to know if she is safe walking on the streets alone. The woman told News 8 she's heard about several sexual assaults in the neighborhood.

"It's not as safe as people think it is. You do have a lot of sexual assaults that occur," the email said.

"I think the area is a problem area for women getting assaulted. I think it's a false sense of security that we live in a nice neighborhood," a woman said.

The News 8 CrimeFighters ran the numbers for sex crimes and burglaries over the past 90 days in La Jolla Colony within a one-mile radius of the intersection of Nobel Drive and Regents Road. Our Crimetracker map shows five sex crimes and 26 burglaries, all within the past three months.

Police advise residents to keep windows and doors locked, and be aware of your surroundings when walking the streets.

"I usually don't walk alone at night, and when I get to my car I make sure nobody's in the back or in the car," a woman said.
