Dealership to be El Cajon's first green certified building

Posted: Updated:

Toyota of El Cajon is hoping to be the first certified green building in that city. News 8 took a tour today of the brand new dealership that's all about saving water and energy.

The brand new Toyota of El Cajon building on Arnele Avenue is actually a remodel of the former Home Depot building. Vice president Greg Kaminsky says  when they did the makeover, they used green technology and used recycled materials.

"In this floor there's 40 percent recycled content. In other areas we have 90 percent recycled content. We also have bamboo flooring, which is a renewable resource," Kaminsky said.

In the restrooms, the toilet handles let you choose either low flow or high volume flushes.

"The fixtures in the bathroom save a great deal of water," Kaminsky said.

Energy efficient lighting throughout reduces the building's carbon footprint.

"The lights, when we leave a room they go off, and when we enter they pop on automatically," Kaminsky said.

In the service bays, hydraulic lift uses environmentally friendly vegetable oil. Even the car wash recycles the water it uses and stores the reclaimed water in holding tanks. Next month that reclaimed water will start flowing through an efficient drip sprinkler system.

"Ultimately our goal is to have that water be for landscape irrigation," Kaminsky said.

The dealership is currently applying for LEED registration. If approved, it would be the first green building in El Cajon.

If you want to check out the new building, Toyota of El Cajon will have tours and a free pancake breakfast Saturday, Nov. 7.
