New Chargers stadium could be built in East Village near Petco Park

Posted: Updated:

As hopes fade for a new football stadium in Chula Vista and Escondido, Mayor Jerry Sanders is discussing with Chargers officials the possibility of a downtown stadium near Petco Park.

The city and Chargers staff members began talking again in January, with Mayor Sanders and Chargers president Dean Spanos sitting down to talk on Oct. 27.

One site they discussed is the Wonder Bread factory location in the East Village near Petco Park.

The site is attractive to both sides because major infrastructure is already in place, which could reduce the overall price of the new stadium.

A stadium project in City of Industry may be forcing the mayor to deal with the issue now so that the Chargers are not tempted to move north.

The City of Industry site would be located about 15 miles east of Los Angeles. It received a big boost from the state legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger considering environmental impact studies.
