City spending increases despite budget deficit

Posted: Updated:

Even though the city is facing a $179 million budget deficit, spending under Mayor Jerry Sanders has increased in 10 city departments.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, spending has increased by $101 million.

Police spending increased by 18 percent, or $60 million, over the past four years.

The Office of Homeland Security’s budget went up by 40 percent.

The Ethics Commission reported an increase of 50 percent.

Mayor Sanders defended the increases, saying the spending was linked to costs set up by the previous administration.
