A North County family targeted by vandals is afraid the incident may actually be a hate crime. The family contacted the News 8 CrimeFighters after videotaping hundreds of hateful remarks plastered all over their car.

At first it looks like some sort of a high school prank - hundreds of Post-It notes stuck to the outside of a car off Black Mountain Road in Rancho Penasquitos, but some of the stickers have hate messages targeting the owner of the car and his religion.

"'Pigs, oink, we love Jesus'… we're Jewish and we feel it might be a hate crime. So we're not sure if it's a hate crime or kids playing around," the car's owner said.

Prank or not, the owner was so concerned he did not want to be identified.

"It's scary because you don't know if you were personally targeted. It makes us feel uncomfortable," the car's owner said.

At least one of the stickers references a local high school.

The owner called police and wants to know if other families have been targeted.

"We've lived here for 10 years. We never had any problem with any neighbors. We're friendly with everybody. We have no idea who did it," the car's owner said.

The News 8 CrimeFighters ran the numbers for vandalism and vehicle crimes in Rancho Penasquitos over the past three months within a one-mile radius of the intersection of Black Mountain Road and Maler Drive. Our Crimetracker map shows four acts of vandalism and five vehicle crimes, all within the past 90 days.

There is no indication the crimes are related, but the owner of the car says it's enough to make him worried about the safety of his family.

"I hope they won't do it again," he said.
