Family of man struck by police cruiser says SDPD lacks compassion

Posted: Updated:

The family of a man struck and killed by a police car Monday morning in University City said the department is lacking in compassion and communication.

At a memorial service Thursday night for Walter Freeman, 63, family members remembered the retired mechanical engineer as quiet, kind and gentle.

They also called out San Diego police for not reaching out to Freeman’s widow and other family members in the wake of the tragedy.

According to police, Freeman was hit and killed when he made an abrupt turn into a lane the police cruiser was driving in.

Police have called it a tragic accident, and said that once the investigation is complete, they will meet with the family.
