VISTA, Calif. (AP) — A man has been convicted of the murder and torture of a woman in her San Diego County home and could get a death sentence.

Jurors on Friday convicted 28-year-old Derlyn Ray Threats of the first-degree murder of 24-year-old Carolyn Rebecca Neville.

Prosecutors say Neville was attacked as she was doing household chores in Vista after dropping her son off at school in September 2005.

Deputies captured Threats a few houses away shortly after the killing. A hammer handle, kitchen knife, hedge clippers and a stun gun were all recovered with Neville's blood on them. She had more than 70 wounds to her body.

Threats also was convicted on burglary and torture charges.

The trial's penalty phase begins Monday.
