Controlled burn in East County

Posted: Updated:

CUYAMACA RANCHO STATE PARK (CBS 8 / CNS) - If you see smoke in the East County Wednesday, don't be alarmed it's a controlled burn.

The burn will take place in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park at around 9:00 a.m. in preparation for a back-country reforestation project.

Crews are scheduled to ignite the blaze on the slopes of Middle Peak in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and have it extinguished by late afternoon, according to Cal Fire.

The prescribed burn will clear roughly 70 acres of vegetation to allow for the planting of more than 20,000 seedlings early next year.

Firefighters will patrol the burn area for several days to make sure no hot spots remain, Cal Fire said.
