After 57 years, Nicolosi's serving its last meal

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Nicolosi's in Del Cerro became an instant hit among San Diegans for true Italian cuisine, but the neighborhood restaurant is closing its doors after nearly six decades.

Nicolosi's doors are closing because the tough economy has taken its tool on the Adobe Falls Road restaurant, which has seen its profits drop nearly 30 percent over the past two years.

"We keep thinking the light at the end of the tunnel's going to keep getting larger, but it's actually it's getting dimmer and now it's going to go out," Sam Nicolosi said.

After word of the shutdown began surfacing Monday, the faithful have been flocking back for the farfalle and all that this old world gem has to offer.

"They're crying. They're hugging us. It's a funeral. There's no other way of getting around it," Nicolosi said.

Longtime customers are stunned their favorite pasta place, with its marvelous meat sauce, will become part of the past.

"I hate it. Pure and simple, I hate it. I want them to stay here," a customer said.

While Sam Nicolosi says thanks and farewell to his loyal patrons, one of them had some parting words for him and his crew.

"We're going to miss you really, really bad. Put out a cookbook so we can still have your food," a customer said.

Sam also says his landlord was also not going to renew his lease, so that's another reason he's decided to ride off into the sunset and retire in Mammoth.
