Police: Scam targets elderly Hispanic women

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - The San Diego Police Department is warning the public after receiving reports of a scam targeting elderly Hispanic women at two local strip malls.

In three incidents, the victims say a Hispanic woman approached them speaking Spanish, telling them about financial hardship and their need to visit sick relatives in Mexico or Puerto Rico.

The woman then went on to tell the victims that she worked at a hotel and found some valuable coins or gems and is unsure what to do with them.

A Hispanic male then approached the victims and said he has a friend who can verify the items were valuable, and urges the victim to buy them for several hundreds of dollars.

The scam reportedly left the victims out of between $4,500 and $11,000. In one case, a victim gave the suspects a ride to her bank to get cash.

The incidents took place at strip malls located at 3200 Sports Arena Boulevard and 5600 Balboa Avenue.

Police urge anyone who knows anything about these scams or anyone who may have been a victim to contact them at (619) 531-2000.
