ACLU sues San Diego for trashing homeless property

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the city of San Diego, its police department and city officials for allegedly destroying items belonging to homeless people.

A lawsuit alleges the property taken includes treasured family photos, prescription medications, and blankets used to keep warm.

The filing charges that the destruction happened during a series of raids aimed at harassing the homeless. It seeks the return of their possessions, as well as a permanent injunction to stop further raids and other damages.

The lawsuit charges that such city policies discriminate against the homeless and violate their constitutional rights to due process and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure. It's been filed in U.S. District Court and seeks class-action status.
