ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) - Hookah smoking lounges won't be allowed in Escondido.
The City Council decided Wednesday that hookah lounges would not attract the appropriate crowd to downtown, might jeopardize the health of teens and could burden the Police Department.
No members of the public spoke in favor of hookah lounges at the council meeting.
At least four entrepreneurs recently asked to open northern San Diego County hookah lounges, where customers smoke flavored tobacco through ornate communal pipes. The only area lounge was Hubbly Bubbly in San Marcos, which closed about a year ago.
Councilman Dick Daniels said residents would be exposed to dangerous second-hand smoke. He also expressed doubt hookah lounges would help revitalize the downtown Grand Avenue area.
