SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) -- A man believed to have been crossing the border illegally apparently died in a fall near Tijuana River Valley Regional Park, authorities said.

U.S. Border Patrol officers notified firefighters about the body near Monument Road and Hollister Street about 5:15 p.m. Friday, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

A fire department spokesman said the man apparently fell about 30 feet.

"There are a lot of cliffs out there and areas that are steep," Maurice Luque of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.

The body was expected to be turned over to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy and identification.
