Homeless veterans get warmth from winter shelter

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Homeless veterans now have a place to stay in Loma Portal.

A shelter opened today instead of Friday because of the rain. It's located in the 2800 block of Sports Arena Boulevard south of Rosecrans next to a Goodwill store.

The shelter can accommodate 150 single men.

"We don't proved just three meals a day and a place to sleep in the rain, but we provide a wide host of services that hopefully would get some of these men back in the mainstream as soon as possible," Phil Landis of the Veterans Village of San Diego said.

The Veterans Village of San Diego and the city's Veterans Winter Shelter operates the site.

It will remain open until April 8.
