Landmark tree at Torrey Pines topples in storm

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A landmark tree at Torrey Pines Golf Course was toppled during a big storm earlier this week.

The trunk of the towering cypress tree behind the par-3 sixth green on the North Course snapped near its base, with much of the tree toppling backward. Jon Maddern, the city golf manager, said it was one of 18 trees that blew down on the North and South courses.

The cypress is said to be one of the most photographed trees in San Diego, with pictures of it appearing in golf and travel publications around the world.

Maddern told the San Diego Union-Tribune that city arborists would examine the tree and make recommendations on its care. He estimated the tree to be 40 feet tall, with the damage beginning about 12 feet from the base.
