SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - A home burglar Grinch is stealing Christmas in Mira Mesa. One family contacted the News 8 CrimeFighters after they came home in the middle of the day to find their home trashed.

A small bathroom window is how the burglar broke into the Mira Mesa home last week. Not even the family dogs kept the burglars away.

Vince LaMache and his family were only away from their Reagan Road home for a couple of hours in the morning.

"We left at 9:15 and got back at 11:15 and the whole house was ransacked," Vince said.

The burglar made off with several thousands of dollars worth of electronic and computer equipment.

"Two laptop computers, a portable hard drive, they took a digital camera and digital camcorder," he said.

Vince says the locks on his windows were too old and not strong enough to keep the thief out.

"When the police came out to take a report they said there were a few other burglaries that same day," he said.

The News 8 CrimeFighters ran the numbers for burglaries in Mira Mesa over the past three months within a one-mile radius of Reagan Road and Mira Mesa Boulevard. Our Crimetracker map shows 22 burglaries, all within the past 90 days.

"Just put a wooden dowel in the window, makes it a lot more effective than the actual locks that can still pop out," Vince said.

Vince is taking more precautions now to keep his home and valuables safe, including securing all doors and windows.

"We've gotten new locks for all the windows now, because even the locks on the windows you can still get by," he said.
