High-Speed Pursuit Ends in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspected drunken driver who carjacked a pickup truck in Willowbrook was taken into custody following a dangerous high-speed chase tonight that lasted more than two hours and approached the U.S.-Mexican border, authorities said.

The carjacking that prompted the chase occurred at 120 Street and Compton Avenue in Willowbrook at 7:37 p.m., according to KCAL9 and a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy.  The suspect was driving a white Lincoln Navigator that had been reported stolen Wednesday in Los Angeles when he was involved in a collision around 7:30 p.m. near a Kmart store in the 5800 block of South Vermont Avenue in South Los Angeles, according to Deputy Richard Pena and Sgt. Diane Hecht of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.  The chase continued on the San Gabriel River (605) and San Diego (405) freeways.

The suspect was talking by telephone with his former wife and said he was continuing the chase because he feared authorities would kill him if he stopped, KCAL9 reported.

The suspect vehicle was sent into a spin by a California Highway Patrol vehicle, then boxed in, allowing the suspect to be taken into custody near the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility around 9:50 p.m.
