Saffron - Try some tasty Thai

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Since the 1980s, the spices and flavors of Thailand have been handcrafted into award-winning dishes by chef and author Su-Mei Yu at Saffron.

"The reason they are often quite busy and do a good takeout business isn't that they are quite affordable, but because the good is really quite delicious," San Diego magazine food critic David Nelson said.

The house specialty is the saffron chicken.

"It's marinated in a Thai blend of herbs and spices. It's truly delicious. A lot of restaurants say we use herbs and spices - they mean salt, pepper and maybe some parsley. That's not at Saffron, where the flavors are very complex and very well developed, which is what makes it so popular," Nelson said.

"There are all kinds of great soups; a chicken soup base is filled with spices, with vegetables. You can have it with chicken, without chicken. You can have it spicy, and there are all sorts of noodle choices.

"And if you like a noodle dish as a main course, the drunken noodles - while they are not, but they are made with wild rice.

"Also of course everyone likes pad Thai noodles. These are thin rice noodles in a savory-sweet tangy sauce with tomatoes, tamarind and sugar. Here you can have it with a choice of chicken or tofu as well as bean sprouts, and it's topped with peanuts to add some crunch.

"It's an informal restaurant and as I said, it's quite inexpensive. The perfect place to share," Nelson said.

Located on India Street just off Washington, Saffron casually captures the essence of authentic Thai cuisine.
