Oceanside school official pleads guilty to theft charges

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) - An Oceanside elementary school principal has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $50,000 from her school district and a parent-teacher organization.

Paulette Dastrup Thomson faces a maximum punishment of three years, eight months in prison when she is sentenced Feb. 4.

The 59-year-old veteran educator pleaded guilty Tuesday in San Diego Superior Court to grand theft and misappropriation of public funds.

Prosecutors say Thomson took the money while principal of San Luis Rey Elementary School in the north San Diego suburb.

The Oceanside Unified School District put Thomson on unpaid leave when charges were filed in August. The irregularities were discovered during an audit of the parent-teacher organization.
