Strong surf continues to pound San Diego beaches

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) – Lifeguards made at least a dozen rescues, including one man hospitalized with back injuries, as strong surf continued to pound local beaches Sunday.

The injured man jumped into the water off Sunset Cliffs but was not a strong swimmer, so he couldn't get out of the water, said lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum.

A nearby surfer rescued the man and took him to shore, where paramedics treated him and took him to a hospital, Lerum said.

Another man was caught in a dangerous situation in an area called "The Hole" near La Jolla Cove around 4 p.m., according to the lieutenant.

Lerum said despite heavy waves coming dangerously close to a reef, he was rescued without incident and didn't need hospitalization.

Most of the other rescues took place at Boomer's Beach near La Jolla Cove, he said.

A High Surf Advisory issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect through Monday afternoon.
