Former teacher pleads guilty to statutory rape

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - A former fifth grade teacher pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of statutory rape for engaging in oral sex with a former student.

Prosecutors originally charged Adrienne Feistel, 36, with 17 felonies.

She was accused of having sex with two boys years after they left her class at Rosa Parks Elementary.

Feistel was nearly acquitted during her first trial, which ended in a mistrial after one juror admitted to watching media coverage of the trial and another reportedly told other jurors she would follow her heart when coming up with a verdict.

Feistel pleaded guilty Thursday to just one felony and now faces a drastically reduced sentence at a hearing set for March 18. She could have faced 30 years in jail if found guilty on all original counts.

"We believe it holds her accountable for what she did, for sexually victimizing one of her former students, and it allows the victim and his family to come in and argue for the upper term of three years in prison, which is what we intend to argue," prosecutor Wendy Patrick said.

As part of the deal, Feistel will not have to register as a sex offender. The charges related to the other boy were dropped.
