Middle school locked down after reports of suspicious device

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - A middle school in southeast San Diego was placed on lockdown Friday after a student brought a suspicious device to the campus, officials said.

The lockdown happened just before noon after an 11-year-old student brought an object, described as a bottle with wires sticking out of it, to class at Millenial Tech Middle School at 1110 Carolina Lane, police said.

The student reportedly told others the object was a project he wanted to show his friends.

The school was evacuated as a precaution, and a bomb squad was sent in to investigate the item. They soon determined the object was not explosive or dangerous.

The school was reopened at about 3 p.m.

Parents of students who wanted to pick them up were told to go to 4900 Hilltop Drive with proper identification. School officials were available at that location to coordinate the release of students to parents or guardians.

Students not picked up were with staff on the school's playground.

For more information, parents can call (619) 867-3255 or (619) 704-5736.
