East County woman killed by tree that fell on home during storm

EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) — A woman has been killed by a large tree that fell on her mobile home near El Cajon during the second of three powerful storms that roared through Southern California.

San Diego sheriff's Lt. Mike Munsey says the woman was killed Tuesday afternoon when a eucalyptus tree with a 10-foot diameter trunk crushed her home and a mobile home next door.

Munsey says emergency crews are bringing in a crane to extricate her body from the wreckage.

Elsewhere heavy rains and what was likely at least one tornado pelted the coastline, flipping cars, flooding homes and smashing windows.

Los Angeles County fire officials say they will begin mandatory evacuations at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the mudslide-prone foothill communities near where fires burned through the San Gabriel Mountains last summer.
