Fire rips through market, no one hurt

Posted: Updated:

Flames burned through the roof of a grocery store in National City just after 3:00 a.m. Wednesday. The fire broke out near the intersection of Division Street and Highland Avenue.

Firefighters say the flames were centered in the store's attic, forcing crews to attack it from above.

Pretty large column of fire coming out. We backed everybody out of the structure and made access through the hole that the fire created in the roof," said National City Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Killacky. "We don't generally like to do that, but that was the only way to get out."

Firefighters reported that it took about 25 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

No one was hurt. The cause is under investigation.
